How Long Should You Wait to Wash Your Face or Apply Makeup After a Facial?
Wait at least six to eight hours before washing your face after a facial, and ideally avoid makeup for the rest of the day. Your skin has just been deeply cleansed, exfoliated, and treated with professional-grade products that need time to absorb and work. Piling on makeup or washing too soon diminishes the benefits you just paid for.
In Depth
After a professional facial, your skin is in a uniquely receptive state. Pores are clear, the dead cell layer has been removed, and active ingredients from serums and masks are still absorbing. Here is what to do (and not do) to maximize your results:
First 6 to 8 hours:
- Do not wash your face. Let the treatment products continue working.
- Avoid touching your face with your hands.
- Skip makeup if possible. If you must, use a mineral-based powder rather than liquid foundation.
- Avoid heavy exercise or steam rooms that cause excessive sweating.
First 24 to 48 hours:
- Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser when you do wash.
- Avoid retinol, vitamin C serums, AHAs, BHAs, and other active products that could irritate freshly treated skin.
- Apply SPF generously—your skin is more sun-sensitive after exfoliation.
- Stay out of direct sunlight, tanning beds, and chlorinated pools.
- Skip waxing or other treatments on the face.
After 48 hours: You can resume your normal skincare routine, gradually reintroducing active ingredients.
At Pia Esthetics Day Spa in South Tampa, your esthetician will walk you through specific aftercare instructions based on the treatments performed during your facial.
