Why Exfoliation Is So Important for Your Skin
Exfoliation removes the layer of dead skin cells that naturally builds up on your skin's surface, revealing the fresher, brighter skin underneath. It is one of the most effective steps you can take to improve skin texture, reduce dullness, unclog pores, and help your skincare products absorb more effectively.
In Depth
Your skin naturally sheds dead cells in a process called desquamation. In younger skin, this cycle takes about 28 days. As you age, the cycle slows to 40 to 60 days, meaning dead cells accumulate longer on the surface. This buildup leads to a rough texture, uneven tone, visible fine lines, and clogged pores.
There are two main types of exfoliation:
- Physical exfoliation: Uses a scrub, brush, or textured tool to manually buff away dead cells. Effective but can be too aggressive if done with harsh particles or too much pressure.
- Chemical exfoliation: Uses acids (AHAs like glycolic acid, BHAs like salicylic acid) or enzymes to dissolve the bonds between dead cells, allowing them to release naturally. Generally gentler and more even than physical methods.
The right exfoliation frequency depends on your skin type. Oily and resilient skin can typically handle two to three sessions per week. Sensitive or dry skin benefits from once a week or less, using gentler formulations.
Over-exfoliation is a common mistake that leads to redness, irritation, increased sensitivity, and a compromised moisture barrier. If your skin feels tight, stings when you apply products, or looks red and inflamed, you may be exfoliating too much.
