Can You Wear Makeup After a Microdermabrasion Treatment?
It is best to wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup after microdermabrasion. Your skin has just been deeply exfoliated and pores are open, so applying makeup too soon can clog freshly cleared pores, introduce bacteria, and irritate the treated skin. After 24 hours, you can resume your normal makeup routine using clean brushes and non-comedogenic products.
In Depth
Microdermabrasion removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells, leaving fresh, new skin exposed. This new skin is more absorbent and more sensitive than your usual surface skin. Here is what that means for makeup:
First 24 hours:
- No foundation, concealer, powder, or blush on the treated area
- No primer or setting spray — these contain chemicals that can irritate fresh skin
- Mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+) is the only product you should apply, and it counts as your sun protection, not makeup
- If you must be presentable, tinted mineral sunscreen can provide light coverage while protecting the skin
After 24 hours:
- You can resume makeup, but choose mineral-based or non-comedogenic formulas for the first few days
- Use clean makeup brushes and sponges — bacteria on dirty tools can cause breakouts on freshly exfoliated skin
- Avoid heavy, full-coverage foundations for 2 to 3 days if possible — lighter coverage lets the skin breathe
The silver lining: Many clients find that makeup applies significantly better after microdermabrasion. The smooth, even skin surface allows foundation to glide on seamlessly without catching on dry patches or dead skin. This improved makeup application is one of the most appreciated side benefits of the treatment.
