Will Your Skin Be Red or Irritated After Microdermabrasion?
Yes, mild redness after microdermabrasion is completely normal and expected. Most clients experience a pink, flushed appearance similar to a light sunburn that fades within one to four hours. Significant irritation is uncommon with modern microdermabrasion techniques, and the redness resolves quickly enough that most clients return to their daily activities immediately after treatment.
In Depth
Understanding what is normal versus what might be a concern helps you feel confident after your treatment:
Normal post-treatment effects:
- Redness: Pink to light red flush that subsides within 1 to 4 hours for most skin types. Fair-skinned clients may stay pink slightly longer.
- Tightness: The skin may feel tight or taut for a few hours as the new skin surface adjusts. A gentle, hydrating moisturizer resolves this.
- Mild sensitivity: The treated skin may be more reactive to products for 24 to 48 hours — this is why we recommend avoiding harsh products during this window.
- Slight dryness or flaking: Some clients notice minor dryness the day after treatment as the last of the exfoliated skin sheds.
What is NOT normal (contact us if you experience):
- Redness that persists beyond 24 hours
- Significant swelling, welts, or hives
- Blistering or broken skin
- Burning sensation that does not subside within a few hours
How to minimize redness:
- Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer immediately after
- Use a physical (mineral) sunscreen if going outdoors
- Avoid heat, steam, and intense exercise for 24 hours
- Do not apply retinol, AHAs, or other active products for 48 hours
