How Long After a Bikini Wax Can You Go Swimming?
Wait at least 24 to 48 hours after a bikini wax before swimming in a pool, ocean, lake, or hot tub. Freshly waxed skin has open follicles that are vulnerable to bacteria, chlorine, salt, and other irritants found in water. Swimming too soon significantly increases the risk of infection, irritation, and breakouts.
In Depth
After waxing, each hair follicle is essentially an open pore. It takes 24 to 48 hours for these follicles to close and for the skin's natural barrier to fully restore. During this window, your skin is susceptible to:
- Chlorinated pools: Chlorine is a chemical irritant that can cause stinging, redness, and rash on freshly waxed skin. The open follicles absorb chlorine more readily than intact skin.
- Ocean and lake water: Natural bodies of water contain bacteria that can enter open follicles and cause folliculitis (infected hair follicles that look like red, pus-filled bumps).
- Hot tubs: The worst option after waxing. Warm water combined with bacteria (Pseudomonas is common in hot tubs) creates an ideal environment for infection. The heat also increases inflammation in already-irritated skin.
Timeline for safe swimming:
- 0-24 hours: No swimming, no submersion in any water beyond a lukewarm shower
- 24-48 hours: Pool swimming is usually OK if redness has subsided. Shower immediately after and apply a gentle moisturizer.
- 48+ hours: All water activities are safe. Follicles are closed and the skin barrier is restored.
Planning tip: If you have a beach vacation or pool party, schedule your wax at least two to three days before. This gives your skin time to fully recover and look its best. Our team at Pia Esthetics Day Spa in Tampa can help you time your appointment perfectly.
