Is Waxing Safe If You Have a Heart Condition?
In most cases, waxing is safe for people with heart conditions, but there are specific situations where caution is needed — particularly if you are on blood-thinning medications or have a pacemaker. We recommend consulting your doctor before your first waxing appointment if you have any cardiovascular condition, and always informing your esthetician about your medical history.
In Depth
Heart conditions encompass a wide range of situations, and the risk level for waxing depends on the specifics:
Blood-thinning medications (warfarin, aspirin, Xarelto, Eliquis, etc.) are the primary concern. These medications reduce your blood's ability to clot, which means:
- You may bruise more easily during waxing
- Any minor skin abrasion from waxing may bleed more than normal
- The risk is generally manageable, but your esthetician should know so they can take extra care
Pacemakers: Some electronic massage devices and certain spa equipment can interfere with pacemaker function. While waxing itself does not involve electronics, always mention your pacemaker to your esthetician so they can ensure no conflicting equipment is used during your visit.
High blood pressure: Waxing involves brief moments of pain that can cause a temporary spike in heart rate and blood pressure. For most people with controlled hypertension, this is not a concern. If your blood pressure is uncontrolled or you experience severe cardiovascular symptoms, consult your cardiologist first.
Recent cardiac surgery or procedures: Wait for full clearance from your cardiologist before any spa services.
At Pia Esthetics Day Spa in Tampa, we take your health history seriously. Please share any medical conditions or medications before your session so we can provide the safest possible service.
