How to Manage Pain Before a Waxing Appointment
The most effective way to manage waxing pain is to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment. You can also apply a topical numbing cream containing lidocaine, stay hydrated, avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of your appointment, and schedule outside of your menstrual cycle when skin sensitivity is highest.
In Depth
Here is a complete guide to minimizing discomfort before and during your waxing session:
Before your appointment:
- Take ibuprofen or aspirin 30 to 45 minutes before. These are anti-inflammatories that reduce both pain and post-wax redness.
- Apply numbing cream (4-5% lidocaine) 30 minutes prior. Cover with plastic wrap for better absorption. Wipe clean before the wax begins.
- Stay hydrated. Dehydrated skin is tighter and more pain-sensitive. Drink extra water the day before and the day of your appointment.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least 4 hours before. Both increase blood flow and skin sensitivity.
- Schedule smartly: Avoid booking during or just before your menstrual period, when hormonal changes increase pain sensitivity. Mid-cycle (about two weeks after your period starts) is typically when pain tolerance is highest.
- Exfoliate the day before (not the day of) to remove dead skin. This helps the wax grip hair, not skin, which reduces pulling sensation.
During the appointment:
- Breathe. Deep breathing — inhale before the pull, exhale during — genuinely reduces the perception of pain.
- Do not tense up. Relaxing your muscles makes the skin more pliable and the wax pull less painful.
- Communicate with your esthetician. If you need a moment between strips, say so.
