Is the Second Waxing Session Less Painful Than the First?
Yes, the second waxing session is almost always less painful than the first. Most clients report a noticeable decrease in discomfort starting with their second appointment. By the third or fourth session, many describe the sensation as mild and very manageable.
In Depth
There are several reasons why waxing gets easier over time:
- Finer regrowth: After the first wax, hair grows back thinner and softer because the follicle has been weakened. Finer hair requires less force to pull out, which means less pain.
- Less hair per session: Your hair does not all grow at the same rate. After the first wax removes everything, only a portion of your hair is in the active growth phase at any given time. Second and subsequent sessions have fewer hairs to remove.
- Weakened follicles: Repeated waxing gradually weakens the hair follicle over time. Weaker follicles release hair more easily, reducing the pulling sensation.
- Your pain threshold adapts: Your nervous system becomes accustomed to the sensation. What felt sharp and surprising the first time feels familiar and manageable the second time.
- Reduced anxiety: Much of first-time waxing pain is amplified by anxiety and anticipation. Once you know what to expect, the psychological component drops significantly.
How to maximize the improvement:
- Stay on schedule — wax every four to five weeks so all hair is caught in the right growth phase
- Do not shave between appointments — shaving resets the hair to coarse, thick growth
- Exfoliate between sessions to keep follicles clear and hair growing in the right direction
