How Long Should You Wait After Shaving Before Getting Waxed?
Wait at least two to three weeks after your last shave before coming in for a wax. Your hair needs to be at least one-quarter inch long — about the length of a grain of rice — for the wax to grip it effectively. If hair is shorter than this, the wax will slide over it and the results will be incomplete and frustrating for everyone.
In Depth
This is the most common question we get, and the answer is firm: patience is essential. Here is why the waiting period matters and what to expect:
Why two to three weeks? After shaving, hair is cut blunt at the surface. It takes approximately 14 to 21 days for that hair to grow long enough for wax to grip and pull from the root. The exact time depends on your individual growth rate — some people reach one-quarter inch in two weeks, others need three.
What if I shaved recently?
- Less than one week ago: Definitely too soon. Reschedule your wax for two weeks out.
- One to two weeks ago: Borderline. If you can feel stubble but cannot pinch the hair between your fingers, wait another week.
- Two to three weeks ago: Likely ready. If you can see the hair and feel its length, you are good to go.
- Over three weeks: Perfect. If the hair is longer than half an inch, your esthetician will trim it before waxing.
The hardest part: Resisting the urge to shave during the grow-out period. We know it is uncomfortable, especially if you are used to shaving daily. But pushing through this phase is critical — once you establish a regular waxing schedule, the grow-out between sessions becomes much less noticeable as hair grows back finer and sparser.
Our estheticians at Pia Esthetics Day Spa in Tampa can assess your hair length and advise whether you are ready or need more time. Call us if you are unsure.
