How Much Does the Microblading Procedure Hurt?
Most clients describe microblading as mildly uncomfortable rather than truly painful. A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure, which significantly reduces sensation. Most people rate the discomfort as a 3 to 4 out of 10 — a light scratching or pressure feeling, not the sharp pain many expect.
In Depth
Pain is the number one concern for anyone considering microblading, so here is an honest breakdown of what the sensation actually feels like:
Before the procedure: A professional-grade topical anesthetic (numbing cream) is applied to your eyebrow area and left on for 20 to 30 minutes before the artist begins. By the time the blade touches your skin, the area is significantly numbed.
During the procedure:
- The first few strokes may feel like a light scratching or etching sensation — similar to a cat scratch
- As the numbing cream continues to work (and additional numbing is applied during the process), most clients say the sensation fades further
- Some areas of the brow are more sensitive than others — the tail (outer end) tends to be the most sensitive, while the body (middle) is the least
- The second pass (going back over the strokes to add pigment depth) is typically less uncomfortable than the first because the skin is already numbed from the initial work
Factors that affect pain level:
- Menstrual cycle — sensitivity is highest just before and during your period
- Caffeine and alcohol increase sensitivity — avoid them the day of
- Individual pain tolerance varies, but even sensitive clients manage comfortably with numbing
