Can You Get Microblading If You Already Have Permanent Makeup?
It depends on the condition of your existing permanent makeup. If the old pigment has faded significantly and the color is not too dark or saturated, microblading can sometimes be done over or around it. However, if the existing tattoo is dark, heavily saturated, or an undesirable color (blue, gray, or orange), it may need to be lightened or removed first before microblading can achieve good results.
In Depth
This is one of the most nuanced situations in microblading, and it requires an in-person consultation to properly assess. Here is the general framework:
When microblading over existing work is possible:
- The old pigment has faded to a light shadow — barely visible
- The color is a neutral or warm tone (not blue, gray, or ashy)
- The old shape is close to the desired new shape (or faded enough to allow reshaping)
- The skin has not been scarred by previous removal attempts
When correction is needed first:
- Dark, saturated old tattoo: Microblading hair strokes will not show over dark pigment. The old work needs to be lightened first (typically with saline removal or laser).
- Color migration: If the old pigment has turned blue, gray, or orange (common with aged tattoo ink), color correction is needed before new pigment can look natural.
- Undesirable shape: If the old tattoo is in a shape you do not want, it may need partial or full removal before microblading in a new shape.
Correction options:
- Saline removal (draws old pigment out through the skin's surface)
- Laser removal (breaks down pigment with light energy)
- Color correction (depositing a neutralizing color to counteract unwanted tones)
