Questions about: Dermaplaning

Although both are physical exfoliation procedures with anti-aging benefits, they are performed very differently. Both methods are noninvasive, virtually painless, and have no recovery time as well as leave the skin looking renewed and refreshed while minimizing superficial scarring and uneven skin tone. Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skins cells, which assists in the unclogging of pores around the nose, mouth, and chin. Dermaplaning scrapes away dead skin cells as well as vellus "peach fuzz" hairs. Unlike Dermaplaning, which can only be performed on the face, Microdermabrasion can be performed on other parts of the body such as the neck and decollete. While both services are available for almost everyone, Dermaplaning is better suited for those with skin sensitivity and redness. Selecting which service to get can boil down to person preference or esthetician suggestion.
There is no downtime and no side affects, so it's a perfect treatment for busy lifestyles.
Anytime! Once per month is recommended for best results.
Anyone can be! Dermaplaning is especially effective on those with dry or rough skin texture as it can help to minimize superficial acne scarring or uneven skin tone. It is also beneficial for more mature skin, which tends to have a buildup of dead cells as cellular turnover slows down with age. Since no chemicals are used in the procedure, it can be good for those who are allergic or sensitive to chemical peels. We do avoid treating anyone with acneic skin as this will only worsen the condition, however we do offer alternative facial treatments to help treat active acne and can offer Dermaplaning further down the line once the acne is better under control. The treatment is also great if you want to achieve a flawless makeup base as the vellus "peach fuzz" hair can cake up in foundation.

At Pia's we have a number of clients who come in regularly for facial waxes and love the option of receiving the Dermaplaning Treatment or Dermaplaning Facial as an occasional alternative so that they may receive the hair removal they are looking for with the added skin benefits, not to mention the pampering that comes with it. By removing the build-up of hair, oils, dirt and dry skin, it increases penetration of product, meaning quicker, better results.
There are no formal aftercare instructions. The esthetician who performs the treatment will advise you of any personal aftercare suggestions based on your skin care needs assessed during the procedure.
No preparation is required for Dermaplaning, it’s a perfect pick me up treatment for the busy professional.
Dermaplaning is a safe and painless physical exfoliation procedure. The esthetician will first cleanse and dry the skin, then the skin is stretched while the blade is held at a 45-degree angle to reduce the risk of nicking the skin. The esthetician uses gentle, small strokes to scrap off dead skin cells and vellus hair. After the Dermaplaning is complete, the esthetician will apply a serum or moisturizer depending on the clients skin type and a lip and eye product to finish. The hair will not grow back thicker or more stubbly.
It can feel tingly straight after, much like other exfoliation treatments, but the procedure is not painful.
Dermaplaning is only performed on the face.
Dermaplaning is a highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel held at a 45 degree angle to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top layer of dead skin cells along with fine, vellus "peach fuzz" hair, revealing a smoother and brighter complexion.
No medication is necessary for Dermaplaning. However, if you are currently using skin care products/medications such as Retin-A, Obagi, Acutane, or other strong exfoliants/peels/brightening treatments at home, they must stop being used at least 3 days before receiving the Dermaplaning treatment.
