How Long After Leg Waxing Can You Sunbathe?

Wait at least 48 hours after leg waxing before sunbathing or tanning. Freshly waxed skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, and sun exposure during this window can cause hyperpigmentation (dark patches), sunburn, and prolonged irritation. After 48 hours, apply SPF 30 or higher generously before sun exposure.

In Depth

Waxing removes the outermost layer of dead skin along with the hair, leaving your skin slightly more exposed and sensitive to UV radiation. Here is the complete sun-and-wax guide:

First 48 hours after waxing:

  • No sunbathing, tanning beds, or extended outdoor sun exposure on waxed areas
  • No self-tanner — the chemicals can irritate open follicles and apply unevenly on freshly exfoliated skin
  • If you must be outdoors, cover the waxed areas with loose clothing

After 48 hours:

  • You can resume normal sun exposure, but apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) generously
  • Freshly waxed skin tans more evenly because the dead skin layer has been removed — but it is also more susceptible to burning, so be cautious
  • Self-tanner can be applied after 48 hours and often looks better on recently waxed skin because it is smoother

Planning for vacation or events: Schedule your wax three to four days before a beach vacation or sun-heavy event. This gives your skin time to fully recover while still looking smooth and fresh.
