Beautiful Nails. Safer Choices With Ingredients You Can Trust: what we use
Almost never because of the polish. The chipping is decided before a single drop of color goes on, in the ten minutes of prep most people never watch and most fast appointments skip.
Here is what is actually happening. Your nail plate has natural oils on it. If those oils are not removed, the polish has nothing to bond to, and it lifts. If your cuticle work was rushed, polish ends up sitting on skin instead of nail, and skin sheds, taking the polish with it. If the coats went on thick because thick looks lush in the chair, they stay soft underneath and peel instead of hardening. And if nobody dragged the brush across the tip of your nail to seal the free edge, water and daily friction get underneath the color and lift it from the front.
Four small steps. Each one takes seconds. Together they are the difference between three days and ten.
We do not oversoak. Water swells the nail plate, and when it contracts back down as it dries, polish applied over the swollen version has nowhere to go but off. A long soak feels indulgent and it works against everything that comes after it.
We clean and dehydrate the nail surface before base coat, including underneath the free edge where oil and residue collect. We shape before polish rather than after. We apply thin, even coats and let each one set. And we cap every tip, on the color and again on the top coat.
None of this is exotic. It is standard professional technique that gets cut when a schedule is running four clients deep. We stayed small partly so it does not have to be.
There is a distinction worth knowing, because it affects your nails for months. The cuticle is the thin layer of dead tissue sitting on the nail plate. The eponychium is the living skin at the base of your nail, and it is a seal that keeps bacteria out of the nail matrix where new nail is formed.
Aggressive cutting takes both. That is where hangnails come from, and ridges in new growth, and the tight, angry look around the nail a few days after an appointment that seemed fine at the time.
We push back, remove only the dead tissue that belongs on the nail plate, and leave the living seal where it is. The result looks just as clean and your nails grow in better for it.
Most people pick a shape because they like how it looks, which is a perfectly good reason. It is worth knowing that it also determines where your nails break.
Square shapes have corners, and corners catch on things. If your nails are thin or you work with your hands, a squoval, oval, or almond shape distributes stress along a curve instead of concentrating it at two points, and you will break fewer nails without changing anything else you do.
We will tell you what your nail bed and your nail thickness actually support. If you want square anyway, that is your call, and we will shape it well.
Hands take more sun than any part of your body except your face, and they almost never get sunscreen. In Florida, add the hours your left hand spends on a steering wheel. The skin thins, the texture roughens, and hands end up looking older than the person attached to them.
The Pure Fiji Manicure pairs the nail work with actual skin care, using nutrient rich Fijian products that soften and hydrate rather than just smelling nice for an hour. It is the version to book when your hands feel tight, dry, or flaky, or when you have not done anything for them in a while.
If you want straightforward nail work without the skin treatment, that is a completely reasonable choice and we will not push you past it.
A few things extend the wear more than anything else you could buy:
Pia Esthetics has been on Bay to Bay Boulevard in South Tampa since 2004. One Tech stays with you for your whole appointment, and it starts with a short conversation about what your hands actually need.
