Can You Get Waxed While Using Differin (Adapalene)?
You should stop using Differin (adapalene) for at least five to seven days before any waxing appointment. Differin is a retinoid that thins the outer layer of skin and accelerates cell turnover, which makes the skin significantly more vulnerable to tearing, burning, and scarring when wax is applied and removed.

Differin (adapalene 0.1% or 0.3%) is a popular over-the-counter and prescription retinoid used for acne treatment. While excellent for skin, it creates a serious contraindication for waxing:
Why Differin and waxing do not mix:
- Retinoids thin the stratum corneum (the outermost protective layer of skin)
- When wax adheres to thinned skin and is pulled, it can lift the skin itself — not just the hair
- This results in raw, open wounds that are painful, prone to infection, and can leave permanent scarring or discoloration
The timeline:
- Stop applying Differin to the area to be waxed at least 5 to 7 days before your appointment
- For stronger prescription retinoids (tretinoin/Retin-A), stop 7 to 14 days before
- You can resume Differin 48 to 72 hours after waxing, once any redness has subsided
Other products to pause before waxing:
- Tretinoin (Retin-A)
- Retinol serums and creams
- AHA and BHA exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic acid)
- Prescription acne medications (Accutane requires a 6 to 12 month wait)
