How Long Does Hair Need to Be for Waxing?
Hair should be at least one-quarter inch long — about the length of a grain of rice — for waxing to work effectively. This is roughly two to three weeks of growth after shaving. If hair is too short, the wax cannot grip it properly and the results will be patchy. If it is too long (over half an inch), your esthetician may trim it before waxing.

Getting the hair length right is one of the most important factors for a successful, comfortable waxing session. Here is what you need to know for different areas:
- Brazilian or bikini wax: One-quarter to one-half inch is ideal. If you have been shaving, wait a full two to three weeks before your wax appointment. We know it is tempting to shave in between — resist the urge, as shaving resets the hair to a blunt, coarse state that makes your next wax less effective.
- Legs: Same one-quarter inch minimum. Leg hair tends to grow more uniformly, so timing is usually straightforward.
- Underarms: One-quarter inch. Underarm hair grows faster, so you may reach the right length sooner — about 10 to 14 days after shaving.
- Facial hair: Even a slight length works for facial waxing since the wax used on the face is specifically designed to grip finer, shorter hair.
What if my hair is too long? Do not worry about it. If you have not shaved in months and the hair is quite long, your esthetician will trim it to the ideal length before waxing. There is no need to trim at home — let us handle it.
