Why Is Waxing Over Varicose Veins Not Recommended?
Waxing directly over varicose veins is not recommended because the pulling action of wax can damage the already-weakened vein walls, potentially causing pain, bruising, bleeding under the skin, or in rare cases, triggering a blood clot. The surrounding areas can usually be waxed safely with careful technique, but the veins themselves should be avoided.
In Depth
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins where the valves that normally regulate blood flow have weakened. The vein walls are thinner and more fragile than normal veins, which is why they require special consideration during any form of hair removal.
Why waxing poses a risk:
- Fragile walls: The physical pulling force of wax removal puts stress on the weakened vein wall, which can cause rupture or increased swelling
- Increased sensitivity: The skin over varicose veins is often thinner and more sensitive, increasing the risk of bruising and skin damage
- Blood clot risk: In severe cases, trauma to a varicose vein can contribute to thrombophlebitis (a blood clot in the superficial vein), which is painful and requires medical attention
Safe alternatives:
- Wax around them: Your esthetician can wax the areas surrounding varicose veins while avoiding direct contact with the veins themselves
- Trimming: Hair over varicose veins can be carefully trimmed with scissors for cosmetic improvement without any pulling force
- Shaving (carefully): A gentle, single-blade razor can remove hair without the pulling force that waxing involves
At Pia Esthetics Day Spa in Tampa, our estheticians are trained to identify varicose veins and adjust their technique accordingly. Always point out any varicose veins to your esthetician before the session begins.
