How Does Your Artist Choose the Right Pigment Color for Microblading?
Your microblading artist selects the pigment color based on a combination of your natural hair color, skin tone, undertone (warm, cool, or neutral), and personal preference. The goal is to create a shade that looks natural and complements your features — not a one-size-fits-all match but a customized blend that accounts for how pigment interacts with your unique skin.
In Depth
Pigment selection is one of the most critical skills in microblading because the color you see in the bottle is not the color that heals in your skin. Here is how our artists approach it:
Factors in color selection:
- Natural hair color: Your brows should complement your hair. The general rule is one to two shades darker than your hair for lighter-haired clients, and matching or one shade lighter for very dark-haired clients.
- Skin undertone: Warm undertones (yellow, peachy) work best with warm-toned pigments. Cool undertones (pink, blue) pair with ash-toned pigments. Neutral undertones offer the most flexibility.
- Skin type: Oily skin tends to make warm pigments appear cooler as they heal, and dry skin retains color more accurately. Your artist adjusts the pigment formula accordingly.
- Healing changes: Pigment oxidizes as it heals, typically warming up and softening. An experienced artist selects a shade that accounts for this shift.
The consultation process: Before any blade touches your skin, your artist will hold multiple pigment swatches against your skin and hair, discuss your preferences (natural vs. bold), and show you the selected shade for approval. You have full input and final say on the color.
Touch-up adjustments: The 6- to 8-week touch-up appointment is partially for color correction. If the healed result is slightly warmer or cooler than desired, the artist can adjust the pigment formula.
At Pia Esthetics Day Spa in Tampa, our microblading artists have extensive color theory training to ensure your brows heal to the perfect shade.
